"The Racial Prism"

Attending schools in Birmingham Public Schools for my entire life, I have always been used to a very diverse student body. Even our district website and post cards display photos of diverse groups of people (kind of trying too hard). I never exactly identified segregation as a problem. I may be taking a naive stance here but I think the problem at Groves is that we see a problem with self segregation and that we are often oblivious to the much larger deep-rooted issue of segregation. Just twenty miles down the road, Detroit is the most segregated city in America.

  1. Yeah, same here. I always kind of distantly saw the self-segregation, but never really thought of it as a problem—more like, well; those are their friends, makes sense that they hang out with them. But now I get that maybe that was also the self-segregation's fault—you hang out with only one group of people, you end up having your friends be within that one group of people. But (speaking from personal experience) this hasn't really been problematic, just distancing. It's not that we're incapable of getting along, we just don't try all that hard.

  2. I agree that it isn't really a problem that we have. Like Karey said in class, people are more comfortable around people that are similar to them. I guess this part of it is a problem because people "should" be comfortable around people of any race. I just think that the possibly underlying ideas here are a bit off.

  3. I don't think that we have any racial tension at Groves, but there is still some segregation. However, I think that the reason for the segregation is mainly due to what Karey mentioned in class. Right now, it's harmless, but I believe that the segregation in school could translate to segregation in the real world and lead to a situation that is similar to 8-mile. That said, I think that the students of Groves are far less likely to be the cause of something like that compared to other schools.
